Participation and Community Involvement Is Important

Have you ever seen something up on a bulletin board about a community meeting? Heard about a local club? Watched an event come together but didn’t think you had anything to contribute? There are many ways to get involved in the community and your involvement is important. Here are a few reasons why you should get involved in some way or another:

Reason 1: Your Opinion Is Valid and Important

Those who make decisions on committees or in groups within the community will likely want to hear your ideas and feedback. Community opinions are important parts of any project and there are often good benefits that come from them. Whether you feel qualified or not, you can always give an opinion about what might need to be changed, what was done right, and where priorities might need to lay next time around.

Reason 2: Explore New Perspectives

Community involvement often comes from one type of person within the community and you might feel like you don’t fit in. However, just because you come from somewhere different or have a unique perspective in some way or another doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a voice. Giving the community organizations a balanced understanding of the views in the community is important to the events and issues that come from those groups.

Reason 3: Meeting People

If you are new to the community, getting involved can help you meet people, form bonds, and forge new friendships. No one wants to live in a neighborhood and not know people, spending most of their time in their home and never venturing out. You can meet people within the area in any way that interests you, whether that’s joining a club, going on hikes and talking to others along the way, or volunteering to help with an event.

Reason 4: You Enjoy It

You may have to force yourself to raise your hand and participate in something, but chances are, once you do, you’ll enjoy it. When you help with an event and things really come together, it feels good. When you join a club and have new friends because of it, it’s a real joy. Being a part of a community helps you to settle into your new home and lifestyle in a way that simply makes you happy.

Reason 5: Take Ownership

Your home is located in the community, but it’s nice to actually feel like part of the community as well. Having involvement in the area in decisions, projects, or events, will help you feel like you own a piece of the community as well.
