Halloween Safety Tips For All Ages

Halloween is a fun holiday for everyone. Adults enjoy watching their children dress up in their costumes and trick-or-treat for candy around the neighborhood. For kids, it’s a whole different kind of experience that they will always remember with fondness. They get to dress up, play with their friends, and collect candy. All of this is only true when safety measures are put into place. Use some of these tips to create a safe Halloween for everyone in the San Elijo Hills community.

Trick-Or-Treating Safety

When crossing the street with your kids, cross only at the corners and don’t let them go by themselves. Be on the lookout for slow-moving vehicles and make sure to walk across the street together. Remind your kids of these rules and the importance of staying on the sidewalks at all times. Cars could be turning and not everyone will watch carefully on this busy night, so kids need to know to watch for cars as well. If kids are old enough to trick-or-treat alone, they need to be in a group that will practice these same safety precautions.

Costume Safety

Costumes are one of the most fun parts of this holiday, but they can cause issues as well if they aren’t done in a safe manner. If your kids are going to be out trick-or-treating after dark, make sure their costume is light in color or, at the very least, has reflective tape or glow-in-the dark stickers on it so they can be seen. Consider face paint instead of a mask whenever possible so your child’s vision isn’t obstructed. Make sure the child has a hand to carry a flashlight or glowstick. The costume should also be the right size so there aren’t any extra tripping hazards.

Driving Safety

If you are driving through the area on Halloween, slow down even more than you normally would in a residential area at night. Children are excited to trick-or-treat, and you can’t predict when they might pop out in front of you. Take extra time going through intersections, even if there isn’t a stop sign, and watch driveways when you turn in or try to back out. Forget about anything that might distract you, even the radio, and concentrate on the road and the kids around you. Keep headlights on and look from left to right continuously to watch for kids as far away as possible. If you can avoid driving during the peak trick-or-treating hours, do so. Otherwise, proceed with great care to keep everyone safe.

Halloween Safety Requires Cooperation

In order for you, your kids, and the rest of the community to remain as safe as possible around Halloween, everyone has to do their part. Keep safety tips in mind and talk them over with your kids. Ask neighbors what they are doing to keep their kids safe and share your ideas with them. Halloween in San Elijo Hills is one of the most fun times of the year, and a safe Halloween is a memorable Halloween.
